Tens of thousands of mustangs still roam the American West. Their symbolism spurred an act of Congress. Their images stir imaginations worldwide. They also crowd out native species, fall victim to drought, breed until the land can no longer feed them. As their numbers grow, and homes for them dwindle, the real burden is not on the horses, but on the people. Can we save the wild from the horses? Can we save the horses from themselves? And if we save them, are they even wild at all?
